Scientific Games Expands BC Lottery Partnership to Include Sports Betting

Canada still doesn’t have single game sports betting but that doesn’t mean it’s not a lucrative market for gaming providers. Such is the case with New York listed lottery and gaming services company Scientific Games (NASDAQ: SGMS). The company has made their presence known in the nascent US sports betting market over the past year and now they’ve announced that they’ve expanded their partnership with the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) to include a suite of digital sports betting and iGaming solutions to the province including player account management services. The expanded deal extends the relationship for another five years through 2024.

The sports betting volume processed by Scientific Games is extremely impressive. On their website, they note that 2.4 billion bets were processed through their platform in 2018 which includes a peak of 20,000 bets per minute for a single operator. They processed 177 million bets for the 2018 World Cup soccer tournament and 220 million transactions for England’s Grand National 2018. They also provide a wide range of services to state and provincial lotteries from providing scratch off tickets to creating technology platforms.

Jordan Leven, Group Chief Executive of Scientific Gaming subsidiary SG Digital had these comments about the company’s relationship with the BCLC:

“We’ve worked closely with BCLC for years, and we’re excited to continue building momentum with them in the Canadian market. Our gaming platforms and sportsbook solutions are a perfect fit for their large audience, and the continued trust, confidence, and innovation on both sides will drive positive growth in the industry.”

Cameron Adams, Interim VP of Digital & Enterprise Services at BCLC had these observations:

“We’re excited to continue our relationship with Scientific Games and offer a comprehensive array of sports betting technology to our players. Scientific Games has helped power significant growth for BCLC’s PlayNow.com digital gaming site over the past several years, and this will help us to continue to grow and evolve our customer experiences into the future.”

The Canadian sports betting market will really boom once national law changes to allow single game wagering. This has been discussed for well over a decade now with very little progress made. Currently, players are required to make their wagers with two or more betting interests (eg: parlay wagering).
