Of all of the US states that have come online with sportsbetting in the post PASPA world New Mexico has one of the most interesting regulatory frameworks. While many–if not–most states trip all over themselves trying to come up with a burdensome bureaucratic mess with accompanying usurious taxation scheme New Mexico is definitely unique. In fact, New Mexico’s tribal casinos pushed the issue forcing the state regulatory body to adapt. The Santa Ana Star Casino and Hotel in Bernalillo, NM right outside of Albuquerque simply opened up a sportsbook asserting that it was allowed under their existing Class III betting compact with the state. Maybe the most interesting thing about it–the state has agreed with the tribes’ position.
Several more casinos have since added sports betting. Most recently, it’s the Mescalero Apache Tribe at New Mexico’s Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino to add sports betting and they’ve signed up William Hill to operate the facility. The sportsbook will be opened this Summer in hopes of having it in full gear by the start of NFL betting season. William Hill will be responsible for all phases of the betting operation including risk management and other technology for day-to-day operations, including wagering, mobile kiosks, and InPlay betting. It is William Hill’s first partnership in New Mexico and their first with a tribal gaming entity.
William Hill US president of retail David Grolman had this to say about the deal:
“Working with the Mescalero Apache Tribe and the National Indian Gaming Commission on this partnership agreement was important to us. Inn of the Mountain Gods is one of the premier resorts and casinos in the southwest and together we plan to bring a first-class experience to sports fans in the region.”
The Inn of the Mountain Gods is a downright gorgeous property that earned a spot on the CASINO INSIDER list of ‘7 BEST CASINOS FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURE ENTHUSIASTS‘. This is what we had to say:
The name sounds like a Ronnie James Dio song title but the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort Casino is a huge and extremely impressive property in Mescalero, New Mexico which is three and a half hours South of Albuquerque. Owned by the Mescalero Apache Tribe, the Inn of the Mountain Gods would be worth a visit even without the casino element. They offer spa services, several dining options including a gastropub with 60 beers on tap and a steak house and a cocktail lounge. The rooms are tasteful and comfortable with most having a view of the gorgeous mountain scenery that surrounds the property. There are plenty of outdoor activities including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, golf and a zip line. There’s even skiing in the Winter though nothing that will make you forget Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. A great place to relax and get away from it all.
Here’s what Frizzell Frizzell Jr, chief operating officer at Inn of the Mountain Gods, had to say about William Hill’s involvement:
“Over the years, our customers have come to expect a high level of service and the best casino offerings possible. Our sportsbook will be no exception.”
“Together with William Hill, we will offer state-of-the-art betting technology, and innovative wagering opportunities including in-play options. We know this is something our customers have been looking forward to and we’re thrilled to be able to partner with the best in the business to bring it to them.”
